parent coaching

Because what happens between sessions matters just as much as what happens in them.

When your daughter is in therapy, you are not a bystander. You are one of the most powerful forces in her recovery and how you respond to her anxiety, her perfectionism, or her relationship with social media at home can either support the work she's doing in sessions or quietly undermine it.

That's not a criticism. It's simply the reality of how adolescent mental health works. The patterns that keep girls stuck are maintained in their daily environment and parents, with the best intentions, often find themselves accommodating those patterns in ways that feel helpful in the moment but make change harder in the long run.

Parent coaching at Waypoint Therapy is designed to change that.

What parent coaching is:

Parent coaching is a separate service from your daughter's individual therapy a dedicated space for you to understand what's driving her behavior, learn how to respond in ways that support her growth, and build the confidence to hold appropriate boundaries without damaging your relationship with her.

Sessions are held with you alone, not with your daughter present. This is your time to ask the questions you can't ask in front of her, process your own feelings about what she's going through, and get practical, specific guidance on the situations that come up at home.

Parent coaching is a good fit if:

  • Your daughter is currently enrolled in one of the Waypoint programs and you want to maximize her progress

  • You've noticed patterns at home such as reassurance seeking, avoidance, meltdowns around school or social situations and you're not sure how to respond

  • You feel like you're walking on eggshells and want a clearer framework for how to support her

  • You want to understand anxiety, perfectionism, or social media's impact on adolescent girls more deeply

What sessions cover:

Depending on your daughter's primary challenge, parent coaching sessions draw from the same Waypoint Resilience Model framework, helping you understand each of the five pillars and your role in supporting them at home. Topics commonly covered include:

  • How anxiety is maintained by well-meaning accommodation and what to do instead

  • How to respond when your daughter refuses, melts down, or shuts down

  • How to praise and encourage without reinforcing perfectionist thinking

  • How to talk about social media in a way that opens conversation rather than closing it

  • How to support exposure practice at home between VR sessions

  • How to take care of yourself while supporting a struggling teenager

Format:
Parent coaching sessions are 50 minutes, available in-person in East Brunswick or via telehealth across New Jersey, Florida and Maine. Sessions can be scheduled as a standalone service or as an add-on alongside your daughter's Waypoint program.
