frequently asked questions
Who are the Waypoint programs designed for?
The Waypoint programs are designed for adolescent girls ages 12 through 18 who are struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, school-related stress, and social media pressure. College-age young women are also welcome. If your daughter is avoiding situations, putting enormous pressure on herself, or her anxiety is interfering with school, friendships, or daily life, the program was built with her in mind.
Do you only work with girls?
Yes. Waypoint Therapy specializes exclusively in adolescent girls and young women. This focus is intentional, the pressures teen girls face around perfectionism, social comparison, appearance, and academic performance have distinct patterns, and a specialized approach allows for deeper, more targeted work.
How long are sessions and how often do we meet?
The initial intake session is 90 minutes. Ongoing sessions are 55 minutes and take place weekly. Consistency matters in this work, and weekly sessions allow for steady momentum between appointments.
What exactly happens in the VR sessions?
VR is introduced at session four, after your daughter has learned the foundational coping skills of the Waypoint program. Using the oVRcome platform, she puts on a lightweight headset and enters a realistic simulated environment such as a school hallway, a social situation, a performance setting, whatever us relevant to her specific anxiety. The therapist guides the session in real time, controls the environment, and adjusts the intensity based on how your daughter is responding. After each scenario, therapist and client debrief together to reinforce what was practiced. The goal is for your daughter to apply her skills in the moment, not just in anticipation of a future situation.
What if my daughter is nervous about the VR or doesn't want to try it?
That is completely normal and expected. Many teens feel curious and a little apprehensive before their first VR session and both responses are welcome. No one is placed in an environment before they are ready. By session four, your daughter will have built enough of a foundation and enough trust in the process that most teens are willing to try. If she needs more time, we take more time.
Will my daughter have homework between sessions?
Yes. Progress in therapy happens between sessions, not just during them. Your daughter will have structured practice activities to work on between appointments, applying the skills she is building in real-world situations. These are calibrated to be challenging but manageable, and they are reviewed together at the start of each session.
Are parents involved?
Yes, and intentionally so. Parent coaching is offered as a separate but complementary service. What happens between sessions, how parents respond to their daughter's anxiety, whether accommodation is occurring, how limits are set around academic pressure and social media, all have a direct impact on treatment outcomes. Parent coaching sessions give you the tools to support your daughter's progress rather than inadvertently reinforcing the anxiety.
Does my daughter have to want to come to therapy for this to work?
Not at the outset. Many teens arrive skeptical, reluctant, or convinced that nothing will help. That is not a barrier to starting. What matters more is a willingness to show up and, over time, a growing engagement with the work. Most teens become more invested once they begin to experience results. If your daughter is resistant, we can talk through how to approach the conversation with her during your consultation.
Do you take insurance?
Waypoint Therapy is a private pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. Many clients are able to seek reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits. Upon request, a superbill is provided after each session that you can submit to your insurance company. It is worth calling your insurance provider before starting to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits and your reimbursement rate for a licensed clinical social worker.
What does the full program cost?
Individual sessions are $250 each. A bundled program rate of $3,375 is available for the full 15-session program, which represents a 10% discount. The bundled rate is paid in advance and is the most cost-effective way to complete the program. Payment plans can be discussed during your consultation.
What happens after the 15 sessions are complete?
By the end of the program, the goal is that your daughter has a set of skills she owns and can apply independently. For some clients, the 15 sessions are sufficient. Others choose to continue with less frequent maintenance sessions to consolidate gains and address anything new that has come up. That decision is made collaboratively based on where your daughter is at the end of the program.
How do I get started?
The first step is a free 15-minute phone consultation. We will talk about what your daughter is experiencing, answer any questions you have about the program, and determine together whether Waypoint is the right fit. There is no obligation, and no question is too small.
